At a yarn shop!

At this yarn shop!

As you can probably tell, I've been enjoying my job which is a few blocks away from Kent Station.

As for spinning, I've been spinning a 80/20 alpaca/merino blend that I got at Weaving Works in Seattle.

I loved their fiber/spinning section, not so much their yarn section.

It's a beautiful heathered grey and it's spinning up lovely!

Also, Amy gave me some of her dog's Emerson's hair to spin up!

I haven't washed it yet so it smells a little stinky, but it's so soft and white!

Knitting, it's mostly been knitting for my book and so, I can give a vague description...

a pretty lilac cardigan, a maroon lace shawl and some fair-isle handwarmers.

I'm thinking of self-publishing my book once it's finished as it's very complicated to do a book the traditional way.

I'm not planning on my book being traditional anyways, you can expect some recipes and other fun things scattered through out.

I haven't been knitting that much so, I haven't been posting. Duh.

In the last month or so we have aquired a few more pets. 8 baby chicks, 2 doves(w/ 1 baby) and 1 puppy. I guess I'd better take some photos and post it soon.

If you look to the left, I have a music player with a few favorites. When I say few I mean few. If you ask me what my favorite bands are we can have an hour long conversation. No joke.

Still have the stupid headaches, but I can still knit a little even with a headache. I can't do lace or decreasing, just ribbing and stockinette.

Have you signed up for Ravelry yet? I love it!

Agghhhhh! Sorry about the photos...I thought the problem was just with my computer! To see the real pictures go here. To answer the question that's on everybody lips...no, I did not use fruit to dye my yarn. I wonder what would happen if I did dye yarn with fruit and vinegar. Would the sugar react? Would the yarn take the dye in the fruit? Would the finished yarn be so delicious that I had to eat it!?! Jk. I made you think about it though, didn't I? The challenge is on, find a fruit to dye yarn. Post the results. Go.

I haven't had much to blog about, until now...presenting, Colorfulpurls first shop update! That's right, I'm on Etsy! Right now I have just two skeins to test out Etsy. Below are pictures of the skeins along with part of the description that I gave on Etsy.

Yummy lemon yellows, juicy oranges and tart grapefruit are delicious to eat, but even better on yarn!

Alpaca Mitts

We got a new SD card reader! Now I can load pictures on the blog and music on my phone( I use my phone as an MP3 player.)

Remember this yarn? I made them into super soft and warm hand mitts/hand warmers. I used Easter egg dye to color the cuff, kool-aid/Easter egg dye for the pattern and undyed yarn for the background.

This is my crazy socks roving spun up into singles.

This beauty is the crazy socks singles plied. I think it's somewhere between 11-13 WPI. I just love handspun yarn , what about you?

My SD card reader is broken. Why is this significant? Because I have to load my pictures to the SD reader and then to my computer. Translation: no pictures for a while. Without pictures, telling you about my finished project would be boring. So, why don't you go to Knit Picks and look at cool stuff? Like their DPN WIP Tubes, wool sock yarn, wool nylon sock yarn, lace weight or blocking pins.

Chipate (a flat bread)

Chipate is a Ugandan style flat bread that is used to dip in stews or to be eaten by itself. It is also good folded around chicken and rice or with butter.

My version of chipate:
1 cup white flour
1 1/2 cup spelt flour
2 tsp. vegetable oil
2/3 cup of water
pinch or two of salt
handful of chopped onions
pinch of powered garlic

Knead together all of the above ingredients in a medium bowl until it looks like pizza dough(or tortilla dough). Makes about 6 2inch balls of dough or 18 smaller balls of dough. Roll each ball flat using a rolling pin. Cook them for 1 to 3 minutes each side on a medium-heat ungreased skillet until they are light brown and bubbly. Serve with seasoning salt, chicken, beans and rice.

You can also add chopped green peppers or carrots instead of onion.

Who says yarn can't grow on trees?

Can you imagine how much these trees would sell for? Imagine all these knitters scrambling to the nursery to buy a yarn tree! Hehehehe!

I actually got this yarn from Dale of Norway for my knitting book. They sent me a lot of yarn but, it wouldn't all fit on the tree. ;)

This is going to be a non-photo post due to the fact we are having trouble with our card reader. Once it starts working again I'll post pictures of my alpaca mittens and the yellow cake with chocolate frosting that I baked the other day.

Have you heard Matsiko? Matsiko is a children's choir from Uganda. All but one of the children have lost at least one parent. In spite of this these children have so much hope which makes sense that they named the choir the Ugandan word for hope. They are touring the country singing and dancing thear ways in to peoples hearts.

Want some advice? Don't buy a bag of old dirty wool. Insteed buy something that colorful, maybe even exotic. Who doesn't want to try spinning camel down or silk? Be creative and thoughtful. They will be very happy with you and one more thing, don't ask for something in return. It's a gift so, they don't have to give you the yarn or the finished product. :)
Most spinners/knitters are generous but, they don't like to be forced to be generous. That being said happy shopping.

Tail wagging, shining curious eyes, jingling dog tags, and always eager to please are some of the things that come to mind when I think about my dog, George, who died on Sunday at 12 1/2 years old. We adopted him 6 years ago from a lady who was unable to take care of him. He was a Cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle) who loved to play in the snow, lick dishes in the dishwasher, take car rides, go boating, go to the beach and eat butter popcorn even though he was allergic to corn.

"Awwww" Isn't that a cute picture of George? We were babysitting our two year old cousin when she decided she wanted a house for George. Couch cushions worked great. Can you imagine what he's thinking? "Am I done yet? Are these people crazy!?! They want me to sit inside this weird cave and then hold up a box they call a camera at me and tell me to smile! Fine, I'll do it. If it makes you happy. Just as long as I get a treat afterwards."

I will miss him, but I'm glad he's no longer in pain. My family and I found out about a year and a half ago that he had a tumor between his heart and lungs, but decided against an ultrasound guided biopsy because of the risks. He also had some disc disease in his back, so we gave him pain meds for awhile then only as needed, which wasn't much until last week.

George kept active and doing well partly due to our other dog, a black Pomeranian named Teddy who we got last April at 7 months old. First, George ignored Teddy, then tolerated him, and finally accepted him as a buddy. Well, as much as an old dog can accept an active little fluffball. George ignored all my yarn and wool, so I could leave my bag of yarn laying near by my chair, but Teddy loves yarn in every form. I still haven't figured out how to untangle some energized singles he played with last fall.

George will be remembered for his steady eyes and faithful presence laying around the house.

Yesterday I baked a abstract-yellow-cake-triple-fudge-chocolate-chip-frosting cake. Abstract meaning off-center, somewhat random(a little bit pysanky, don't you think so?) design with M&M's on top....

.....and zig-zag M&M's the side! Please ignore that the cake is slanting to the left....One little *cough*major*cough* problem with the cake is that the frosting has chocolate chips in it and that tore up the top of the cake. Bet you were wondering why there was a pile of M&M's on the cake....

Try, try, try again

If you first don't succeed, try, try again or something like that. Here is another attempt at showing you the amazing Romney and mohair I bought from The Pines Farm. The owners are very nice and helpful people. When my mother and I were at the fair and we couldn't make a decision about what to buy, Lin Schwider came up to us and helped us pick out the perfect combinations.

Starting on the left: two bags of blue/purple Romney roving weighing about 23 ounces total, 6 ounces of blue/pink/fuchsia/purple mohair and yarn spun from the fiber. I will go into detail in a moment.

The yarn on the top is spun with Romney, while plying the two strands mohair was added. The yarn on the bottom was hand-carded 50/50 Romney and mohair. It was then plied with mohair.

This is 15 ounces of un-carded locks of Romney in shades of: blues, aquas, pinks, purples and greens.

Finally, here's some blue/purple mohair!

The Brain Eater

No, I'm not talking about TV.

I hate migraines. I hate cameras that don't work. I hate guitar straps that break. Sigh....and now things I love: yarn, yarn, corn, peaches, camels, apples and leaves!?! So yeah, I haven't been up to much except for playing guitar, writing songs, spinning a little, knitting a little, sewing jean purses, working and...getting migraines. Now guess which one is taking up all of my creative energy? You got it, "The Brain Eater". Well, maybe it doesn't eat my brain, but it feels like it. I have learned something very important:
When I have a migraine I am not allowed to

a. blog
b. handle anything coming in or out of the oven.
c. talk(if it's really bad I'll say stupid stuff)
d. knits socks or lace.

If I try the last two I'll think it's fine until I look at it when I don't have a headache and go "AHHHH! What was I thinking!?! The question I should ask myself is "Was I even thinking?" Maybe I was, maybe I wasn't but she definitely was. I just love tams and fair isle.

I failed at my New Year's resolution before I even made it. In other words, it is impossible for me to post every week. I did a little Christmas knitting, some that I will post as soon as Husypoet gets back to me....and some that is for my book so you can't see it. :)

Christmas presents! I got some pretty awesome stuff, like headphones/micro SD card/adapter to convert my phone into an MP3 player!

"knit" phone cozy II

Here are the completed photos of my "knit" cell phone cozy. I used scarp white cotton for the main color and variegated cotton for the coordinating color. Underneath my cell phone cozy is the Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook which I absolutely love! Even if you don't knit socks or spin yarn you'll love the section on dying yarn or perhaps you would like to see the gallery of finished socks?

Headaches, secrets and a rabbit named Dove

Hmm, why haven't I posted lately? Probably because of my three-week-long-migraine. Because of my headaches I've missed work, got behind in school and I now have a lot of housework to do. Now you are probably thinking that not a good reason why I haven't been posting, that I'm just trying to come up with an excuse. But, I'm not. I really have had headaches so bad that I couldn't even look at a computer monitor. Anyway, enough complaining.

Did you notice something on the side? It's Dove, my virtual pet! Dove is actually named after one of my rabbits in real life. The real Dove's full name is Dove Dark Chocolate. She's a black Holland lop who loves to be petted and played with. Maybe I'll adopt some more of my animals as virtual ones...

I have a lot of knitting going on, but none that I can show you. I can tell you though that my purple sweater is going to be amazing! I won't tease you guys anymore by telling you about all the stuff you can't see.

I'm still fairly new to blogging so if you have any comments or suggestions please let me know. Oh, one last thing...if you like my blog why don't you pass it on? You know, tell your friends about it? Thanks in advance.

Kool-aid, egg dye and alpaca

I dyed the alpaca in two batches. The first being the blue fiber. I filled an old margarine container with hot water, vinegar and the liquid egg dye. I gently put in the washed uncarded alpaca fiber in the container and put the lid back on. I then left it outside for about two days. Very scientific, right? Anyway, after that I washed the fiber with cool water and put in on a old towel to dry. I dyed the green fiber very similar, except I used kool-aid and only let it cool for one night. Hm, now what should I do with it? How about mittens! I decided that I wanted a fair isle pattern with variegated yarn with a natural color background and blue cuffs. The alpaca required hardly any carding and I was spinning in no time. I first spun the undyed fiber, then the blue and finally the blue/green.

This is the blue/green yarn still as a singles yarn. I spun fair long chunks of blue then green, so when I would ply it I would have some solid color patches.

Here is the blue/green yarn plied. About 7-8 wraps per inch unwashed. I think I want to make a flower design on the mittens but, I'm not sure...

The undyed background yarn. 7 wraps per inch. Very, very, very soft.

The cuff yarn. 7 wraps per inch and so pretty. I really should get a new camera to actually show what it looks like.

"Knit" a Cell Phone Cozy

Here's my super-cute cell phone cozy! I'm using size 4 needles, scrap white cotton and scrap variegated cotton. If you look closely you will see the word "knit".

Your Weekly Fiber

This is all the fiber that I've bought this year. Well, not really. Here's most of the fiber that I bought this year. All the fiber is from The Pines Farm. Lovely fiber from wonderful people. This does not include what I got for free. Anyway look at this fiber:

Starting at the far left: 2 bags of Romney roving, one bag of luscious mohair, yarn spun from the Romney with mohair added while plying and Romney carded with mohair and then spun.

Blue/purple mohair! Mohair has to be the shiniest fiber on the planet. Evil picture can't show the wonderful depth of color. Sigh...

I've been lame...

First of all, I would like to say that it's not my fault that this post is late. Well, it's not entirely my fault. A couple of days ago I wrote this awesome post and I saved it, but, it didn't save my changes. So, I pouted a while and then the power went out. When the power came back the next day I wasn't feeling that well. I spent almost all of Sunday cleaning after church and I was super busy today. Anyway...

I have been so busy and lazy and lame. I will make it all better by showing you amazing yarn that Dale of Norway and Trendsetter sent me. First the swatching yarn from Dale.

I'm going to start with the chunkiest: Hubro. 100% wool. With size 13 needles it knits up in a flash. Like super-hero fast. Svale: 50% cotton, 40% viscose and 10% silk. I love the elegance in the shimmer and the drape. Baby ULL: 100% wool. Wonderful sock yarn.

The Trendsetter yarn:

Aura: 100% nylon. Super squishy and shimmery. Looks a lot like tinsel. Love it.

Cashwool: 100% wool. Very fine lace-weight yarn. I am so excited to use this yarn to make a shawl with it!

First of all I would like to apologize for not really posting this summer. I've been pretty busy and a little bit lazy. I will have more time now that the summer is over. Yay! I will post my finished projects after I write the patterns.

I know I said I would post as soon as the crazy sock roving dried. But, I did not account for the fact that I would be very busy for the next few weeks. As in "I've barely been at my computer for more then 5 minutes a week!" busy. Okay, maybe I haven't been that busy. But,when I wasn't busy I usually to tired to think. Now, brace yourself...I've hardly knitted! All I did was finish the painting scarf and worked on a shawl. That's it. Except for reknitting the straps on my tank top. Wich was hardly anything and now the moment you have been waiting for...

My crazy sock roving! It doesn't look half as crazy as when it was wet now does it? The yellows in the picture are more of a mellow green.

The Lonely Tank Top and The Growing Scarf

My paint box scarf is getting longer and I realized something...the two skeins of yarn are not exactly the same colorways...but, I LOVE that! The scarf seems to be growing a mile a minute even though they are knitted on size 6 needles. :)

This is a tank top that I knitted a while ago, but, I've been having some trouble with it. More specifically the straps. Apparently cotton stretches. A lot. As in several inches. So, it is sitting lonely and unloved until I make the new straps.

This is a picture of the tank top sideways because I can't figure out how to turn it around. :(
Also, this picture is closer to the real color of my tank top.

(Not)Boring Socks

Last night I had a craving to dye some roving for socks. Nice mellow dark green with some blue/purple lightly tossed in. But, when I got out my usual kool-aid I thought about some food dye I have and I tossed out my previous ideas of fairly boring socks out the window.

So, here is two shots of the roving before I microwaved it. I will post pictures of the finished roving as soon as it dries and then you can see all of it's amazingness. :)

As I have been very busy and I've also had a little bit of trouble with posting there has been no new postings lately. So, it's not that I haven't been knitting or spinning.

Yarn from the Brown Sheep Company! 16 beautiful skeins of yarn! I may have to do close ups later...

This is a lame picture of my amazing(not that I'm bragging) handspun yarn. I started with a raw(unwashed) romney fleece that I washed, dyed with kool-aid, carded and spun. I was aiming for a sock-weight yarn, so much for that, I think this is a heavy-worsted yarn.

I decided to start a cardigan last weekend and I love to make my own patterns and I love cables. I'm knitting the front pieces and the back pieces to avoid excess seaming which I hate.

My pom(pomeranian) loves yarn to. All forms of yarn. Cotton, wool, mohair, acrylic, he loves them all. So, I forget to put away my sweater-in-progress and he had at it. :(

I finally finished the toe of the second Dr. Seuss sock! Now I just have to weave in the ends... I just love the stripes and the contrasting colors. When you're knitting the cuff/leg of the sock it looks like the cat-in-the-hat's hat.

My beautiful paint box scarf is getting bigger! I love the way the super-simple stitch pattern helps blends the colors.

I am almost done with my Dr. Seuss socks! I've avoided posting a picture thinking that it will motivate me to finish the toe(it hasn't so far...).

Guess what I got in the mail yesterday! I wrote a lot of yarn companies asking to donate awesome yarn for the knitting book that I'm writing. Look at what I got! One skein each of twizzle and mountain goat from Mountain Colors.

From Knit One, Crochet Two, THREE balls of paint box! I immediately dropped my sock project and started on a scarf with the paint box yarn.

In other knitting news I started a sock from the toe up with a provisional cast on.

Since today is my first day at blogger I decided to share a photo of one of my first handspun/handdyed/handknitted socks. Also known as my strawberry socks(Strawberry was one of the flavors of kool-aid that I used to dye the yarn with and the socks smelled like strawberries for over a week).

As you can see I'm working on the gusset of my second Dr. Seuss sock! The stripes are fun to knit and I don't have to measure the length of my second sock, I just have to count the stripes to have them come out the same length.
